Conquering a Saturated Market
The mobile phone market was extremely competitive when Apple introduced the iPhone. No room for a new product, or so it appeared. What motivated Apple to enter the market anyway?
You could paraphrase Steve Jobs’ feelings about the mobile phone market as follows:
- [Apple developers] use all of the handsets out there. And it’s frustrating.
- The mobile phone category needs to be reinvented.
- Mobile phones need to be made more powerful and easier to use.
Jobs discusses holes in the market with CNBC on Jan 9, 2007, the day of the iPhone announcement.
Lessons Learned
As of October 2008, Apple is the third-largest global handset maker, measured by revenue. And they sell more units than RIM, maker of the Blackberry. Apple has successfully attacked a “closed” market with the iPhone. What “closed” markets are ripe for attack today?

Interesting concept. I really would not have believed this would happen a few years ago. I am really growing on the entire Apple concept. I have an IPhone and have now purchased a MacBook Pro!!!
