gPhone: The Google Phone?

September 4, 2007 | By Raymond T. Hightower

Marketing guru Seth Godin predicts what the gPhone may be like. Is Google really planning to enter the mobile phone business? Who knows. But if you Google the phrase “google phone rumors”, you’ll get over two million results.

Seth Godin, of Purple Cow fame, believes that the gPhone (if it ever comes into existence) will be:

  • Relatively free. Cell phone carriers will offer it to customers for little or nothing.
  • Relatively open. In other words, third party software developers will be able to write applications for the device.
  • Ad supported. And the ads will be GPS-based. Walk near a pizza joint, and see an add for place. Should we be concerned about privacy here?

I’m a big fan of marketplace competition, so I’m looking forward to the entry by Google.
