GMail: Two Migrations in Ten Days

February 6, 2008 | By Raymond T. Hightower

If your company is still using Microsoft Outlook and Exchange for email, you might be ready for something better. How much time & money do you spend fighting spam? How do you deal with the size limitations of Exchange? Wisdom has migrated two Microsoft Exchange-based email systems to GMail within the last ten days. User response is overwhelmingly positive.

Reduced Spam
Spam. What a pain in the neck. The GMail antispam engine is better than any other tested by Wisdom. It was one of drivers behind our own migration to GMail.

Same Email Addresses
But do your email addresses have to change? No. If you own a domain name, your email addresses will remain username@yourcompany.com.

Increased Storage
GMail mailbox size = over 6 gigabytes (and growing). If you’re running Outlook/Exchange, ask your IT department what your size limitation is. You might be surprised.

Labels vs. Folders
Difficult to explain, but wonderful to demonstrate. Imagine receiving an email from your real estate broker about an offer you made on a house. Do you file the message under real estate, the broker’s name, or the name of your bank? With GMail, you can apply all three and retrieve that message in an instant.

Wisdom: Our Own Crash-Test Dummies
Wisdom used Exchange in-house for nine years. We’ve done many Exchange installations and troubleshooting engagements over the years. And last year, we found something better: GMail.

The Next Step
If your company still uses Outlook & Exchange, talk to your IT department about GMail. If you don’t have an in-house IT staff, then talk to Wisdom.
