Better Diamonds, Better Price
April 4, 2008 | By Raymond T. Hightower
Diamonds will sell for ten dollars per carat in the year 2015. In less than three minutes, a video released by a diamond manufacturer shows:
- How the gems are made.
- Why their product is better than diamonds dug from the dirt.
Future Uses for Diamonds
As diamond prices fall, here are some likely uses for the soon-to-be abundant gems: - Semiconductors. Moore’s Law will soon run its course due to the physical limitations of silicon. Diamond-based semiconductors could take us to a much higher level.
- Laser lenses. Diamonds are optically transparent and they can withstand temperatures that turn glass into liquid. How quickly can we transmit data through diamond-based fiber optics?
- Photovoltaic cells. Currently we use silicon. Silicon has heat limitations cited above. What efficiencies can be achieved when we raise the heat thresholds?
Personally, I’m looking forward to the hardware devices we’ll be able to create with the new technology!
