Chrome Notebooks
Chrome OS is a Linux-based operating system created by Google. Interesting approach: All critical data gets stored in the cloud. Think of this as the return of the network computer.
This is Not New
Computer history buffs may remember the network computer touted in 1990s. Network computers never really took off because key technlogy was not available yet. For example, we had high-bandwidth connections, but such connections are more readily available now. The Chrome Notebook is the latest incarnation of the network computer.
Join the Pilot
You can’t buy a Chrome notebook right now, but you might be able to join the pilot program. Key things to know (straight from Google):
- Chrome OS is for people who live on the web. It runs web-based applications, not legacy PC software.
- The Pilot program is not for the faint of heart. Things might not always work just right.
