Apple Recalls 1.8 Million Batteries

August 26, 2006 – By Kevin Zolkiewicz | Comments Off

Two weeks ago, Dell issued the largest consumer electronics recall in history when it recalled 4.1 million notebook batteries. Now, Apple is issuing their own recall of 1.9 million batteries used in the company’s iBook and PowerBook notebook models.

The batteries being recalled by both Dell and Apple were manufactured by Sony. There is a minor risk that the batteries could overheat and lead to a fire.

Apple’s recall affects iBook G4s and PowerBook G4s manufactured between October 2003 and August 2006. Apple’s newer Intel-based notebooks, the MacBook and MacBook Pro, are not affected by this recall.

Apple is issuing free replacements for customers whose notebooks contain the defective batteries. To check if your battery is affected, visit Apple’s Battery Exchange Program Web site. On this site you can enter the serial numbers of both your computer and the battery itself. If your battery is defective, Apple will ship a replacement to you. Once you receive the replacement, you can use the same packaging and the included pre-paid shipping label to send the bad battery back to Apple. Until a replacement arrives, it’s recommended that you remove the battery from your notebook and use only AC power.
